School of Pharmacy’s annual Katterman Lecture focuses on herbal medicine
Reflecting the growing public interest in alternative and complementary medicine, the 20th annual Don B. Katterman Lecture will focus on “Practical Herbal Medicine.” The lecture is sponsored by the University of Washington Pharmacy Alumni Association and the School of Pharmacy.
The lecture, for pharmacists and other health-care professionals, is from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 17, in Kane Hall on the UW campus. Sign-in begins at 8:15 a.m.
Dr. Gary Elmer, UW associate professor of medicinal chemistry, will moderate the event.
The program includes “Toxicities and Drug Interactions Associated with Some Herbal Products,” presented by Dr. Sid Nelson, professor and dean of pharmacy; “How to Give Herbal Answers in Your Consultations,” by E. Darlene Wilson, clinical pharmacist at the Muckleshoot Health Clinic and clinical herbal consultant; and “The Time of Your Life — Naturally,” by Greg Hovander, UW clinical instructor of pharmacy and a clinical pharmacist.
Herbal products will be displayed by a number of commercial exhibitors.
The lecture is named in memory of Don Katterman, a well-known Seattle pharmacist who was the first president of the Pharmacy Alumni Association and a president of the Washington State Pharmacists Association.
For information on registration, call (206) 543-3485. Three hours of continuing pharmacy education credit is available. Participants are requested to register by
