College of Environment lectures focus on natural hazards
A lecture series presented by the UW College of the Environment will focus on “Surviving Disaster: Natural Hazards & Resilient Communities.” The five evening lectures will explore the latest developments in social and natural sciences that are helping people prepare for and respond to environmental disasters.
All presentations are at 7:30 p.m. in Kane Hall. The lectures are free, but registration is required at uwalum.com/hazards or by phone at 206-543-0540. Follow along on Twitter by using the hashtag #NaturalHazardsUW.
- The series kicks off Tuesday, Oct. 13 with a presentation by David Montgomery, UW professor of Earth and space sciences, who will speak on “Disasters fast and slow: From catastrophic landslides to how we treat our soil.” The book author and MacArthur Award-winner will describe the forces driving deadly landslides and catastrophic soil depletion.
- On Tuesday, Oct. 20, journalist Jed Horne, who wrote the book “Breach of Faith: Hurricane Katrina and the Near Death of a Great American City,” will present “Ten years after Katrina: lessons learned and unlearned.”
- On Tuesday, Oct. 27, Kate Starbird, UW assistant professor of human centered design and engineering, will present “Social media during disaster events,” looking at the evolving role of social media in disaster response and digital volunteerism.
- On Tuesday, Nov. 3, military veteran and nonprofit co-founder Jake Wood will present “Deploying America’s veterans in response to natural disasters and global crises,” about his role as CEO of a nonprofit that trains veterans to respond in disaster situations.
- The series closes Tuesday, Nov. 10, with a presentation by John Vidale, UW professor of Earth and space sciences. “A tale of three Seattle temblors: One big, one deep and one direct hit” will survey past earthquakes and current preparation efforts. (Note: This talk is full, but any unclaimed seats will be released 15 minutes before the presentation.)
