Northwest imagery, original music make unusual vision for ‘The Caucasian Chalk Circle

Bertolt Brecht wasnt thinking of Seattle when he wrote The Caucasian Chalk Circle, a play with songs, in 1944. But director Alyson Roux kept the Northwest in mind when directing the show, opening soon at the Jones Playhouse.

“Resonance: Nature, Glass, and Standing Waves in the Art of Joe Davis,” an exhibition at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery, will feature works by Joe Davis, an artist-researcher in laboratories at both MIT and Harvard University. Davis is a pioneer of “bioart.”


Art up for bid at annual fundraiser Feb. 8

If youd like to take a chance on some art and help a student at the same time, you might want to consider the annual Scholarships for Scholars celebration on Tuesday, Feb. 8. Put on by the 3D4M Program in the School of Art (3D4M stands for Three Dimensional Forum, covering ceramics, glass and sculpture), the event includes a raffle and silent auction, with all proceeds going to support students.

Concerto Competition winners to perform at UW Symphony concert

When the University Symphony performs on Jan. 27, it will be a chance for the winners of the School of Musics annual Concerto Competition to show off what they can do. David Brooks, Yesol Im, Jae-In Shin and Brooks Tran won the opportunity after surviving two rounds of competition. Alternates Hunju Juno Lee and Maria-Alise Agrawal will also perform.

Violinist Mark OConnor performs at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Meany Hall. Embracing Appalachian fiddling, the jazz violin and the canon of classical music for strings, O’Connor redefines the idea of “cross-over” artist.
