Dr. Martha Somerman named to receive Harvard dental schools highest honor
Dr. Martha J. Somerman, dean of the UW School of Dentistry, has been chosen to receive the 2011 Paul Goldhaber Award from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. The award, which is the Harvard dental schools highest honor, goes to a recipient who is held in the highest international esteem in his or her field relating to oral and systemic health.

Health services professor Edward Wagner wins William B. Graham Prize

Wagner founded the Group Health Research Institute. He will receive the prize from the Baxter International Foundation and the Association of University Programs in Health Administration this June.

Two from UW elected to National Academy of Sciences

Donald K. Grayson, a UW anthropology faculty member since 1975, and Daniel Gottschling, a member of the Basic Science Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, have been elected members of the National Academy of Sciences.

Husky Green Awards 2011: Two students, one staffer, two sustainability groups

Three individuals and two groups were honored at the UW Earth Day celebration as winners of the second annual Husky Green Award. The award, sponsored by the Environmental Stewardship Advisory Committee, recognizes those who have shown leadership, initiative and dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability at the University.
Essington wins Pew fellowship to evaluate trade-offs in fisheries

Timothy Essington, UW associate professor of aquatic and fishery sciences, is one of four Pew fellows in marine conservation in the world this year.

Harborview Medical Center honored for HIV/AIDS outreach

Twice in three years: Thats how frequently Secretary of Health Mary Selecky has brought Washingtons Excellence in Health Care Award to Harborview Medical Center. Selecky presented the 2010 Warren Featherstone Reid Award April 19 to honor the hospitals satellite HIV/AIDS care clinics in Everett and Bremerton.

UW professor elected member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences

A UW professor is among some of the worlds most accomplished leaders from academia, business, public affairs, the humanities and the arts to be elected members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Ann E . Nelson, professor of physics , is one of 212 new members announced by the academy.
Henry Art Gallery names winner of Brink Award for an emerging artist

The Henry Art Gallery has given its Brink award to Canadian artist Andrew Dadson. The Brink is a biennial award granted to an early-career artist working in Washington, Oregon, or British Columbia whose work shows artistic promise and who appears to be on “the brink” of a promising career.

UW Awards of Excellence recipients announced

The University will honor 21 individuals and one team of four this year as part of the annual Universitywide awards program. The award winners will be honored at a special event on June 9 in Meany Hall.
Computer Science and Engineering students win National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition

This weekend in San Antonio, eight students from the UW’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering won the trophy in the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition.
Two UW profs win Guggenheim Fellowships
Two UW professors — Heidi Pauwels and Michael Honey — are among 180 scholars, artists and scientists from the United States and Canada to receive fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

School of Pharmacy dean emeritus honored for research excellence

The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy has honored Sid Nelson for his many contributions to pharmaceutic sciences, including work leading to safer medications.
UW scientist named School of Pharmacy’s Distinguished Alumna

Dr. Gail Anderson attended the UW as an undergraduate and graduate student, and then pursued her career here. This month she will receive the School of Pharmacy’s Distinguished Alumna Award for her work on drug treatments for brain injuries and epilepsy.

University of Washington Medical Center named best hospital in greater Seattle in U.S. News & World Report metro area rankings

University of Washington Medical Center has been named the No. 1 hospital in the greater Seattle/Puget Sound region in the U.S. News & World Reports first-ever Best Hospitals Metro Area rankings. Two other hospitals in the UW Medicine health system also ranked in the top 10: Harborview Medical Center ranked No. 3, and Northwest Hospital & Medical Center tied for No. 8.

The UWs Seattle campus has won certification as salmon-safe. The certification, created by the Network for Business Innovation and Sustainability, recognizes the UWs efforts to protect water quality and salmon habitat.

Lifetime achievement award goes to epilepsy drug researcher Rene Levy
Professor and Chair Emeritus of Pharmaceutics Rene Levy has received the 2011 Arthur A. Ward, Jr. Achievement in Epilepsy Award from the Northwest Epilepsy Foundation. He is an expert on medications to control seizures and on drug interactions.
