UW rural education blueprint compels Nairobi visitors

Physicians and administrators from the University of Nairobi visited this month to learn about the UW’s regional programs to improve rural health care, and how to adapt these models to their country’s rural health needs.

Steve Davis will present a lecture, “Intellectual Property and Social Innovation in the 21st Century,” at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, in 138, William H. Gates Hall. Davis is the former CEO of Corbis, the digital image company backed by Bill Gates and now serves as a senior adviser for McKinsey & Companys global Social Sector Office.

Registration open for ethical research collaboration conference

Registration is now open for a conference, “Ethical Considerations in Research Collaborations,” planned for Sept. 22-23 at the University of Washington. Nationally recognized speakers from across the country will focus on ethical challenges in three areas of research collaborations.

Yang Lan will deliver this years Severyns-Ravenholt lecture, sponsored by the Department of Political Science. The evening begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, in 210 Kane.

UW Bothell to co-host North End Community Health Fair

UW Bothell and the Childrens Home Society of Washingtons North Seattle Family Center are hosting the North End Community Health Fair on Tuesday, May 24.

UW Bothells Center for Serious Play is hosting the Futures of Unconventional Narrative Beta conference on May 20. Its an interactive event exploring the intersection between games and stories.

Susan Avila-Smith, founder of a nonpartisan group for American service members and veterans who have experienced military sexual trauma, will speak at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 19, in 120 Kane.

Gries will give a presentation titled “How Americans and Chinese Think and Feel About Each Other and the World” at 7 p.m. Monday, May 23, in 220 Odegaard Undergraduate Library.

Fans of author Stieg Larsson and Scandinavian crime fiction, take note: Daniel Alfredson is scheduled to speak at the UW on Wednesday, May 25.

Disability Awareness Week offers variety of events

From May 23 thru May 28, the ASUW Student Disability Commission will be hosting Disability Awareness Week, including a panel discussion on the future of accessible technology, an evening of disability poetry and art, a flash mob that highlights different forms of communication and a deaf storytelling night.

Farm-to-table dinner May 26 at UW Center for Urban Horticulture

The UW Farm and UW Department of Anthropology will host a fundraising dinner and reception featuring local, seasonal foods. “A Taste of Spring” will be held 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 26.

Get advice on saving letters, photos and more at preservation roadshow

A number of staff from the UW Libraries will be participating in the Seattle Archives Preservation Roadshow on May 14 at the National Archives and Records Administration regional office, 6125 Sand Point Way NE. The event is designed to help the public learn how to preserve their treasured family and personal materials.

Gordon Lafer, a former top adviser on congressional labor policy, will visit Seattle on Tuesday, May 17, to discuss the hot topics of labor law and policy. He will lecture on “Labor in the House: Trying to Build a Pro-Worker Agenda in Congress” 3-4:30 p.m. in the Parrington Hall Forum.

Experienced researchers and health professionals will discuss how they worked through and handled ethical dilemmas likely to be encountered by professionals newly entering the field of global health.

“Standing at the Crossroads: Why Race, Radicalism and Repression on the Pacific Coast and Beyond Matter Now” is the title of the keynote address that will kick off a May 12-14 conference, “Race, Radicalism and Repression on the Pacific Coast and Beyond.”

U.S. Court of Appeals judge to speak at law school

Judge A. Raymond Randolph of the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit will visit the UW Law School for two days as the first Shefelman Jurist-in-Residence. He will speak at a public forum May 13.

Arthur Berman, of Labyrinth Consulting Services, will speak on Shale Gas: A View from the Bottom of the Resource Pyramid, at 7 p.m. Monday, May 16, in 220 Kane.

Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City, will reflect on highlights from his scientific career — including being blamed by adults and school children alike for demoting Pluto—when he speaks at the UW May 12.

Its a day of hands-on family fun dedicated to fungi and mycology.

Attention astronomy fans: Talk, observatory programs planned

Planetary scientist Ralph Lorenz will talk about Saturns moon Titan on May 9, and the Jacobsen Observatory plans open houses on May 18 and June 1.

The Arboretum Foundation and the UW Botanic Gardens Education Department will once again host their popular annual Mother’s Day event, from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 8, at the Arboretum.

UW Bothell will hold its Sixth Annual 5K Run-Walk on Saturday, May 14. The event, hosted by the UW Bothell Alumni Council, has generated more than $40,000 for student scholarships.

'COPE' online education responds to FDA call for safe prescribing of painkillers

A UW online training tool will help the region’s physicians follow new U.S. Food & Drug Administration(FDA)safety requirements in prescribing opioids. The new FDA requirements are in response to a rise in deaths from accidental painkiller overdoses.

Jonathan Sarna, a Brandeis University professor long known for his work on American Jewish history, will deliver the 36th annual Samuel & Althea Stroum lectures in Jewish Studies on Monday, May 9, and Wednesday, May 11.

Namibia gets first-ever pharmacy degree program with help from UW

Namibia’s 2 million people have fewer than 200 pharmacists to dispense essential medications. Namibia has recently opened its first pharmacy degree program at the University of Namibia in Windhoek.

The compost-saving, bike-riding, environmentally conscious UW community loves its Earth Day, and is celebrating in style — and service — over three days this year, from Thursday to Saturday, April 21-23.

Adel Omar Sherif, deputy chief justice of the Supreme Constitutional Court of Egypt, will speak at 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 25 in Room 138 of William H. Gates Hall.

UW engineering exhibits will be on display this Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the annual public event.

Experimental social psychologist Sheldon Solomon to speak

Sheldon Solomon, professor of psychology at Skidmore College, will give a lecture titled John Lockes Errors: Why Left and Right Are Both Beside the Point on April 27, in Kane Hall.

UW Department of Global Health center awarded $300 million for health training

International Training and Health works with local governments and institutions in resource-limited countries to develop skilled health care workers and strong national health systems. The new award is part of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.

Forest resources special events mark UN International Year of Forests

In observation of the UN International Year of Forests, the UW School of Forest Resources has scheduled a forest film festival, a talk May 6 with alums who are leaders in global forestry and a look at forestry education, research and management May 10.

David M. Walker, the founder and chief executive officer of the Comeback America Initiative, will speak at the Evans School of Public Affairs on Wednesday, April 20.

The UW is holding a series of events over the coming months to celebrate the life and work of César Chávez, labor leader and civil rights activist. The series is titled Viva La Causa: César Chávez and the Pacific Northwest.

“Communicating the Science of Climate Change” is the topic of a seminar by Michael McPhaden, affiliate professor in the UW School of Oceanography and president of the American Geophysical Union, on April 21.
