Expertise: Space exploration, icy moons, water and habitability of other planets

Baptiste Journaux is an acting assistant professor in the Department of Earth & Space Sciences and a member of the science team for NASA’s upcoming Dragonfly mission, which will characterize the chemistry and habitability of Saturn’s largest moon, Titan.

His research seeks to identify and characterize the chemical and physical properties of extraterrestrial water-rich environments found in icy moons and water-rich exoplanets, and to determine the limiting factors for habitability of deep extraterrestrial oceans.

Journaux focuses on aqueous systems at high pressures and at the low temperatures relevant for icy moons and the interiors of water-rich exoplanets. He is also collaborating with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory to develop new interior models to study the chemical evolution, transport dynamics and potential habitability of deep planetary hydrospheres.
