Expertise: Philosophical implications of geoengineering
Steve Gardiner is a professor of philosophy at the UW, where he directs the UW Program on Ethics. His research focuses on global environmental problems, justice towards future generations, and virtue ethics. Much of his work centers on climate ethics and on solar geoengineering technologies.
He is the author of A Perfect Moral Storm (2011), and co-author of Debating Climate Ethics (2016) and Dialogues on Climate Justice (2023). He is the editor of the Oxford Handbook of Intergenerational Ethics (in press) and Virtue Ethics, Old and New (2005). He is the lead co-editor of The Ethics of “Geoengineering” the Global Climate: Justice, Legitimacy and Governance (2020) and Climate Ethics: Essential Readings (2010). He is also the joint co-editor of the Oxford Handbook of Environmental Ethics (2016).
