Octavia (Toby) Burton, the UW’s 1979 Charles E. Odegaard Award Recipient and member of the Seattle Chapter of the Links, Incorporated, passed away on June 28, at the age of 92.
Burton was the sixth recipient of the Odegaard Award that was first presented in 1974 to honor members of the community whose leadership sustains the former UW president’s distinguished work on behalf of diversity. Burton, a longtime teacher of children with special needs, was a member of the board of trustees at what is now known as Seattle Children’s and in 1976 joined community members to raise funds to build the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic in Seattle’s Central District.
