Following state competitions around the country including Washinton MESA Day, this past June MESA students from across the nation gathered in San Diego, California, to showcase their projects at the National Engineering Design Competition (NEDC). The participants at the NEDC comprised winning teams from their respective state competitions.
10 states nationwide compete for the ultimate MESA USA NEDC prize of winning the middle and high school categories. The competition theme for 2024 was, “Designing for Equity Locally to Affect Sustainability Globally”.

We are proud to share that this year’s 1st placed middle school team, Isla Funke and Kiera Lanier, was from Westwood Middle School, Spokane with their project design on a “Wildfire alert system for low-income and rural populations”.
We also celebrate the high school team in 2nd place from Chiawana High School in Pasco – with student team – Soleil Olivera, Bradley Caulfield, and Ryan Abastillas. Their design project was on “WildEye: A non-Lethal Coyote Deterrent Device”.
We look forward to the next cycle of MESA competitions in 2025.
Sending a shoutout to all our directors and staff across the state who do this great work with our students!
