Professor James A. Banks, founding director of the UW Center for Multicultural Education, now known as the Banks Center for Educational Justice

In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the UW honors Professor James A. Banks. Hired by the UW College of Education in 1969 as its first Black professor, Dr. Banks is known worldwide for his decades of work shaping the field of multicultural education. Upon his retirement, we are proud to salute Dr. Banks and his commitment to excellence, equity and justice.
