Workshops & Training

3 Campus Wide Diversity Data Workshops were historically opened to all University of Washington staff members in all 3 campuses in most cases, WHO ARE AUTHORIZED TO EXAMINE AND WORK WITH FERPA (The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974) PROTECTED STUDENT DATA. We will NOT be involved in specific data/project requests outside OMAD.

Case study:

1) Tracking STEM major status at the end of Fall2023 quarter, and STEM major status currently (Winter 2024) via sec.transcript & beyond.  For example:
a. Were STEM major(s) last quarter and are STEM major(s) currently.
b. Were STEM major(s)  last quarter but are no longer STEM major(s)  currently.
c. Were NOT STEM major(s)  last quarter but are STEM major(s) currently.
d. Were NOT STEM major(s)  last quarter and are NOT STEM major(s)  currently.

2) School/College transition “matrix” from Fall 2023 Quarter to Current Winter 2024 Quarter: For example,  number of UG students transitioning from Art and Sciences to Foster’s School of Business,  number of College Engineering UG students transitioning to Arts and Sciences and so forth via sec.transcript  (or addition of schools or colleges).

3) Who did NOT come back for the Winter 2024 quarter from Fall 2023 quarter via sec.transcript in relation to academic status (dean’s list, probation, drop….)?  Why do we (OMAD assessment team) exclude spcl_program 61?

4) Comparative analysis of academic status in relation to dean’s list, probation, drop and so forth between non-OMAD vs OMAD students.

5) Comparative cumulative and quarterly GPA analysis between Non-OMAD vs OMAD undergraduate students and data visualization via smooth density plots, boxplots, and non-parametric statistical analysis.

Data Seminar #27

Data Seminar#27) Date:  February 29, 2024  Time:  1:00pm-2:00pm Location: via online
Instructor: Gene Kim

*****ALL OMAD Staff members are welcome to make an individual or small group appointment to see me if this time does NOT fit your schedules.  OMAD staff members are also welcome to make an appointment via aromad@uw.edu to request assessment/data projects specific to their programs’ needs.

Prerequisites: NONE—we encourage you to focus on the outputs/”overall useful theme” from various DS languages demonstrated and try to ignore the detailed code presented.

1) Automating institutional data for NSF/NIH federal grant/annual performance reports  via Python and SQL(Student Demographics & Performance).

2) Two of the algorithms presented at the December 2023 WERA(Washington Educational Research Conference).   In contrast to the conference presentation however, we will connect the algorithms to EDW and AIDB during the demo.   Each algorithm takes bit over 3 minutes to run.

3) Revisiting a 25 year old algorithm in relation to maximum unique number of students per schools and colleges at a university re-rewritten in combination of SQL, Julia, R, and Python  vs “old” algorithm written in R programming language.   For example, measuring one unique student triple majoring in finance(College Code=E), social work (College Code=T), and English(College Code=C), and count this person in all three schools/colleges uniquely per schools/colleges.

4) Python vs R vs Julia: why it doesn’t make a big difference (at least for gene’s operations).

5) Algorithm application in item “B” for historically underrepresented race/ethnicities via SQL and R (application of maximum representation beyond race/ethnicity).

6) Only personnel AUTHORIZED TO EXAMINE AND WORK WITH FERPA (The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974) PROTECTED STUDENT DATA at UW will be able to attend.

RSVP NOT REQUIRED.

Data Seminar #26

Data Seminar#26) Date:  February 22, 2024  Time:  1:00pm-2:00pm Location: via online OMAD staff only

1) Automating institutional data for NSF/NIH federal grant/annual performance reports  via Python and SQL(Student Demographics & Performance).

2) Revisiting gene’s 16+ year old algorithm that automates NSF and US Dept. Ed. annual grant report under 3 minutes instead of weeks:

Case studies/examples:

a. Example of 16+ yr old algorithm of TRIO SSS annual report data automation for 6800+ EOP students from Summer2022 to Spring2023   (SECTION II — RECORD STRUCTURE                           FOR PARTICIPANT LIST)  via SQL and R (This algorithm was presented back in November 2007).

b. Example of 14+ yr old algorithm of LSAMP annual report data automation via SQL and Python (formerly R).

3) Material gene presented at the 2023 WERA(Washington Educational Research Conference):

a. 25 year old algorithm in relation to maximum unique number of students per schools and colleges at a university via SQL, R, and Python.

b. 12+ year old algorithm in relation to maximum representation of race/ethnicities via SQL, R, and Python.

4) If we have time, demonstrating automated operational data.

Case studies/examples:

a. ECC data -> combining and populating multiple 33 spreadsheets via EDW via SQL and R under 2 minutes.

b. CAMP data via SQL, Python, and R.

c. Why using Julia, Python, or R really doesn’t make a huge difference: demo on mixed algorithms.

4) Only personnel AUTHORIZED TO EXAMINE AND WORK WITH FERPA (The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974) PROTECTED STUDENT DATA at UW will be able to attend.

RSVP NOT REQUIRED.
