Conference/Event
I attended Afro-Tech! This conference, dedicated to creating a space for black students in the tech industry, held a significant career fair in Austin, Texas. The event aimed to provide valuable opportunities for students to explore and connect with potential employers.

Motivation to Attend
As a sophomore majoring in Information Systems within the Foster School of Business, I noticed that many school events leaned towards a business focus. Seeking a more tech-oriented exposure, I decided to attend Afro-Tech. I believed it would provide me with opportunities aligned with my major and allow me to explore the tech side of my field.

Goals & Expectations
My primary objective at Afro-Tech was to connect with PWC, the accounting and consulting firm where I secured a summer internship. Additionally, I aimed to establish connections with Google and received a valuable reference for an internship application. Exploring opportunities with American Express, I engaged with recruiters to ensure follow-ups.
Impactful Speakers & Sessions
I attended a captivating session on AI, motivated by the belief that despite concerns, AI enhances task efficiency and brings significant benefits. Contrary to some negative perceptions at UW, I recognized the positive impact AI can have on various industries.

Key Takeaways
Reflecting on the conference, I learned that success does not follow a linear trajectory. While I have a clear mission, the conference taught me that careers can evolve in unexpected ways. Emphasizing the importance of networking, I realized the value of listening to others’ stories and broadening my perspectives.

Plans for Continued Involvement
Having recently attended the NSBE fall regional conference, I plan to participate in the upcoming NSBE national conference, building on the experiences from the previous spring. Eager to seize diverse opportunities, I remain proactive in seeking ways to enhance my professional journey.
