Initiative announces relaunch of its interdisciplinary pilot grant program
The Population Health Initiative has relaunched its interdisciplinary pilot grant program, leveraging project savings from the construction of the Hans Rosling Center for Population Health to dramatically expand the initiative’s internal granting capacity in 2022 and 2023. The relaunched program now features three different tiers of grants with varying foci and awards ranging in size from $25,000 to $200,000.
“We are delighted to have the funding capacity to be able to support the launch of roughly 75 innovative and interdisciplinary projects over the next two years,” said Ali H. Mokdad, the university’s chief strategy officer for population health and professor of health metrics sciences. “We believe our new tiered approach to granting will engage a broader range of disciplines while also incentivizing the importance of community-based research partnerships.”
The three tiers of grants for the relaunched pilot program are:
- Tier 1 Grants: Laying the Foundation
This tier of grant is intended to support small projects and capacity-building work with community and/or other collaborators that is intended to prepare a team for future projects seeking proof-of-concept. Applications will be accepted from faculty members, principal investigator-eligible staff, graduate students and post-doctoral scholars.These awards will be offered quarterly (i.e., autumn, winter, spring) through 2023. Awards of up to $25,000 are available per project, with a project period of up to eight months.
- Tier 2 Grants: Establishing Proof-of-Concept
This tier of grant is intended to support projects seeking to develop preliminary data or proof-of-concept needed to pursue follow-on funding to scale one’s efforts. Applications will be accepted from faculty members and principal investigator-eligible staff.These awards will be offered every winter and autumn through 2023 with a two-stage application: submission of a brief letter of intent, with the most compelling concepts invited to submit a full application. Awards of up to $50,000 per project – or $65,000 per project for teams proposing meaningful partnerships with community-based organizations – will be available with a project period of up to 12 months.
- Tier 3 Grants: Scaling for Greater Impact
This tier of grant is intended to support projects seeking follow-on opportunities for impactful projects that have developed preliminary data or realized proof-of-concept and are seeking to scale their efforts and/or expand the scope of their work. Applications will be accepted from faculty members and principal investigator-eligible staff.These awards will be offered every spring in 2022 and 2023 with a two-stage application: submission of a brief letter of intent, with the most compelling concepts invited to submit a full application. Awards of up to $150,000 per project – or $200,000 per project for teams proposing meaningful partnerships with community-based organizations – will be available with project periods of up to 18 months.
Applications for Tier 1 and Tier 2 grant applications will be accepted beginning in winter quarter 2022. Information sessions for individuals interested in learning more about the relaunched pilot program will be held via Zoom on the following days and times:
- Tuesday, November 30, 2021, 1 – 2 p.m. Pacific (register to receive a Zoom link)

- Wednesday, January 5, 2022, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. Pacific (register to receive a Zoom link)
Attendance at an information session is optional. Submissions will be accepted from any eligible applicant, regardless of whether they attended an information session.
