New research shows heat-related mortality risk is widespread in Washington state

Construction worker outsideAccording to a new University of Washington study, heat-related deaths are becoming an ever-so-prevalent issue across Washington state. An average 8% increase in heat-related deaths has occurred in the past decades, a statistic that will only continue to grow in the coming years.

The study also looked at projections for the future, with data revealing that heat-related deaths – even in areas of the state with much milder climates – are also increasing. The results of this study are vital to understanding how communities, especially those that are not used to extreme heat, can be better prepared for the effects of a changing climate.
