Leadership search: Vice Provost for Global Affairs

Ahmad Ezzeddine named UW Vice Provost for Global Affairs

University of Washington Provost Tricia Serio announced the appointment of Ahmad M. Ezzeddine as the next vice provost for the Office of Global Affairs beginning Feb. 1.

Ezzeddine comes from Wayne State University in Detroit, his alma mater, where he is the senior vice provost for partnerships, workforce and international initiatives. He fills the position vacated when Jeffrey Riedinger retired and became professor emeritus at the UW School of Law. Gayle Christensen has served as interim vice provost of the Office of Global Affairs.

“Dr. Ezzeddine brings a rare combination of a broad global engagement perspective and a deep understanding of the landscape of higher education that will catalyze our own strategies to the benefit of the entire UW community,” Serio said. “I’m thrilled to welcome him to UW.”

Dear Colleagues,

Thank you for agreeing to serve on the search committee to identify and recommend candidates for the position of Vice Provost for Global Affairs. Sheila Edwards-Lange, Chancellor, UW Tacoma, and Danny Hoffman, Professor and Director, International Studies, Social Sciences Division, College of Arts and Sciences will co-chair the committee. As you can see, the committee is composed of outstanding individuals from across the institution.

Our goal is to have a new Vice Provost identified by Fall Quarter 2024.  We seek a distinguished academic and a visionary leader for the Office of Global Affairs who will work well with the UW community, including other academic units, public and non-profit partners, alumni, and donors. Given the nature of this position and trends in higher education, I have opened the position to professionals with either underlying faculty or staff appointments. I am grateful to Gayle Christensen, for serving as interim vice provost as we carry out this search.

The University has a strong commitment to diversity, which I ask you to consider seriously, as you recruit a pool of eligible candidates. Please establish protocols for seeking the opinions and nominations from the broader UW faculty, student, and staff communities, as well as appropriate constituencies outside the University of Washington. At the conclusion of the search, I would like to receive from you the names of 2 to 3 highly qualified candidates.

The first meeting of the committee is scheduled for April 17, 2024, 3-4 p.m. (meeting request coming soon). I will attend a portion of the meeting to discuss my priorities and expectations for the position and the search with you. We have engaged the search firm Isaacson Miller to assist you in this important work.

Sincerely,

Tricia R. Serio
Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
