Updated core elements of effective teaching at UW

5 Elements

Reflecting the goal of developing a shared understanding, these basic, foundational elements are, by design, intentionally broad. They are meant to be applicable in any discipline and teaching context, and on any UW campus. As such, academic units would be able to build upon or add to any of the elements.

Effective teaching is intentionally designed and organized to help students meet course learning objectives.
Inclusive & equitable
Effective teaching considers students’ experiences and creates opportunities for each student to thrive.
Active & engaged

Effective teaching creates opportunities for students to engage with ideas and each other
Growth-oriented
Effective teaching creates opportunities for student to learn through practice and provides feedback that helps them grow their knowledge and abilities.
Relevant
Effective teaching helps students understand why what they are learning matters and prepares them for future learning and life after UW.
