prisoner advocate

An IRB member who has a close working knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of conditions from the perspective of prisoners. The prisoner advocate may be a former prisoner, public defense attorney, prison chaplain, volunteer counselor, member of community-based prisoner advocacy group, or anyone else who meets the requirements. A prisoner advocate attending a meeting of the convened IRB will only vote on items involving prisoners, unless they have also been appointed as a standard IRB member.
