legally authorized representative (LAR)

A Legally authorized representative (LAR) is an individual or judicial or other body authorized under applicable law to make decisions on behalf of another individual. LARs may, for example, provide consent on behalf of a prospective subject to the subject’s participation in research. The terms surrogate decision maker or surrogate consent are also sometimes used.
