What is your Research Focus?
My research falls at the intersection of applied mathematics, statistics, and probability theory. In particular, I am interested in developing foundational understanding of why, how, and when, machine learning algorithms work. In recent years machine learning has been remarkably successful in transforming our society and day-to-day activities and it is now being widely applied in the natural sciences and engineering, in the context of scientific computing. However, scientific computing tasks pose new challenges and demands on machine learning methodologies that should be overcome before these new algorithms can be deployed in safety critical situations. Understanding the mathematical principles behind both the algorithms and the physical processes of interest in the requisite application is our main tool in overcoming the aforementioned challenges.
What opportunities at the UW excite you?
I am excited about the high quality of our students as well as the collaborative culture across the campus. Regarding my research, I am most excited about some of our research centers and initiatives including the Kantorovich Initiative, the AI Institute in Dynamic Systems, and the Institute for Foundations of Data Science.
