July 2015 SAGE Maintenance Release
Overview: Sponsored Program Activity Revisions
The majority of the July maintenance release is focused on updating the way sponsored program activities are defined and clustered in SAGE on both the eGC1 and on Funding Actions. Prior to these changes, the “Funding Purpose” field on the eGC1 and the “Type of Award” field on the Funding Action tracked different but similar values. This causes confusion for consumers of the data and challenges in reporting to federal sponsors, since neither field aligns cleanly with the categories used for federal reporting.
With the below changes, the eGC1 and FA activity types will be brought into alignment with each other, and with the federal reporting categories. Additional fields are also being added to extend automation of reporting further.
Below are the current eGC1 and FA fields and the new Sponsored Program Activity Type fields for reference:

Specific changes within SAGE are as follows.
Replace eGC1 Funding Purpose with Sponsored Program Activity Type
The Funding Purpose field on the eGC1 is replaced by a new Sponsored Program Activity Type field that includes new options that align with federal Uniform Guidance categorizations.
Migrate historical data to eGC1 Sponsored Program Activity Type
The Sponsored Program Activity Type field is populated on all existing eGC1s based on eGC1 Funding Purpose and Funding Action Type of Award data. Populating the SPA Type field on all existing eGC1s will allow for consistent historical reporting.
Update HSD JIT Email to trigger off Sponsored Program Activity Type
The Human Subjects Just-In-Time email is currently withheld when the eGC1 is for an industry sponsored clinical trial. The system had used the Funding Purpose field to indicate whether the eGC1 was for a clinical trial, but will now be updated to look at the Sponsored Program Activity Type to identify clinical trials.
Add Clinical Trial Phase to the eGC1
When the Sponsored Program Activity Type is one of the two Clinical Trial activities (federal or non-federal sponsored), a Clinical Trial Phase field will display on the Details page of the eGC1 and will be required prior to completion of the eGC1. This will assist in review of clinical trial proposals and reporting to the federal government.
Update Printable eGC1 with Sponsored Program Activity Type and Clinical Trial Phase
The printable PDF report of the eGC1 which is accessible throughout the SAGE suite will be updated to remove Funding Purpose and add Sponsored Program Activity Type and Clinical Trial Phase.
Data and Reporting Updates
Add Institutional Activity Category as a reference field for reporting
A new field called Institutional Activity Category is created that can be referenced in reporting for both eGC1s and Funding Actions. The Institutional Activity Category will be derived from Sponsored Program Activity Type so no new user data entry is required to meet this reporting need.
Add Primary R&D Area as a reference field for reporting
A new field called Primary R&D Area is created that can be referenced in reporting for both eGC1s and Funding Actions. The Primary R&D Area will be derived from Sponsored Program Activity Type, thereby requiring no new user data entry.
Reporting Updates
Production proposal and award data views, and SSRS reports will be updated to include the new Sponsored Program Activity Type, Institutional Activity Type, Primary R&D Area, and Clinical Trial Phase fields.
There will be a 2-phase approach to updating of the data in the EDW, to minimize disruption to existing reports and business units connecting to the data in their internal systems.
- Upon SAGE release on 7/7/2015, EDW will be updated to include the new fields. The old fields will remain intact as well.
- At a future point in time, to be coordinate with existing users of the data and with UW IT, the old deprecated fields will be removed from EDW.
