Husky Prevention & Response is a foundational, required online prevention and response course about sex- and gender-based violence and harassment.

At the University of Washington, we remain committed to fostering environments where you feel valued and supported and have the opportunity to learn and grow. As a UW student, you also have an important role to play in ensuring a respectful environment for your peers.

Throughout the course, the strategies offered are meant to create and support positive UW climates and endeavor to stop sex- and gender-based violence and harassment before they happen. The course includes tailored content based on your role as an undergraduate or graduate student.

After completing this course, students will have an enhanced ability to:
  • Contribute to respectful learning and social environments
  • Identify dynamics of healthy relationships, healthy sexuality, and affirmative consent
  • Recognize sex- and gender-based violence and harassment
  • Intervene in situations where problematic behavior may be occurring
  • Respond empathetically when a peer discloses an experience of violence and harassment
  • Understand resources, reporting processes, and UW policies on sex- and gender-based violence and harassment

Course FAQs

Course FAQs

UW takes sex- and gender-based violence and harassment very seriously and expects all students to do the same.

It is very likely you either know a survivor of sexual or relationship violence or will meet someone with that experience during your time at UW. We want to ensure you have the vital information you need to support that individual or seek support for yourself.

If you are required to complete the HPR student course and do not complete it, you will have a registration block placed on your student account and will be unable to register for your second quarter at UW.

Once you complete the course, the block will be lifted within approximately an hour.

Beginning with the academic year 2022–2023 required students include:

  • New matriculated freshman, transfer, graduate, and professional students
  • Returning matriculated students re-entering UW (those who were previously enrolled and have had an absence of one quarter or more)

No, you will only need to take the HPR student course one time. If you have a completion certificate for the student version of the course, you do not need to retake the course. You are welcome to go back into the course and access information at any time.

Yes, this course is specific to the University of Washington and contains information that every student needs. This course may build on the information you have learned in other courses.

Student employees can access the student course and the employee course. If you are a new student and were hired as a student employee, you will be required to complete the student and employee courses. The employee and student courses have unique information that is relevant to those respective roles.

The employee course contains a track for student employees. As of July 2022, the student employee track was abbreviated and now takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. The abbreviated student employee course presumes students completed the student version of the course and provides additional, relevant information for students now operating in an employment context.

You will be required to complete the entire 90-minute HPR employee course if you are in a UW staff or faculty role.

If you are a new or returning student in the academic years 2021-25 and were hired as an employee, you will be required to complete the student and employee courses. The employee and student courses have unique information that is relevant to those respective roles.

The Husky Prevention & Response (HPR) employee course has an abbreviated 20-minute track for student employees. The student employee course is only 20 minutes because it presumes you have already completed the entire required student course.

You will be required to complete the entire 90-minute HPR employee course if you are in a UW staff or faculty role.

There is a difference between a returning and a continuing student. Returning students are those individuals who have utilized the Returning Student Process which is designed for undergraduate or professional-level students wishing to return to the University of Washington after an absence of one quarter or more. You will be required to complete the course if you have been absent from UW, had to re-apply, and your admitted quarter was updated to within the academic years of 2022-2025 or later.

If you are a continuing student who was admitted before the academic year 2022-2023 and has not had a break in attendance at UW then you are not in the required group.

You will be required to complete the course before you can register for your second quarter at UW if, in a future quarter, you are a returning student who meets the above definition.

If you are experiencing any challenges accessing the course, please email tixcourse@uw.edu. This email is monitored Monday through Friday 8 am-5 pm. We will attempt to reply within 48 hours.

When a student has completed the course, the course system generates a completion certificate. The system retains a copy of the certificate and sends one to your UW email on file.

  • Login to the HPR student course
  • Navigate to the home screen (page with all modules listed)
  • On the home screen select “MENU” at the top right

If you do not have a completion certificate you have not completed the course. Proceed to an open module on the home screen to complete the course requirement

If you have a completion certificate but are blocked from registering, please contact tixcourse@uw.edu.

The course was built to be trauma-informed, but it may bring up strong emotions for individuals who have experienced violence or harassment or recently supported someone impacted by violence or harassment.
