Title VI at the University of Washington

The University of Washington is committed to providing equal access to its programs and activities and protecting individuals from discrimination and harassment based on their race, color, or national origin.

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is a federal law that states that: No person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

Title VI also prohibits discrimination, including harassment, based on actual or perceived:

  • shared ancestry or ethnic characteristics, or
  • citizenship or residency in a country with a dominant religion or distinct religious identity.

Title VI and other related federal and state laws impose legal requirements and protections that serve as a foundation from which UW has created policies, practices, services, and programs that work in concert to foster a respectful and inclusive environment for students, staff, and faculty of all identities.
