UW Emergency Management

Prepare in a Year: February

After a major emergency, the likelihood of being able to call your local friends and family is severely limited. Why? The cell phone towers will be at maximum capacity. Every person is trying to call someone to see if they are okay.

The solution? OUT-OF-AREA CONTACTOOA contact

You will have much greater success calling your aunt that lives a few states away than you will calling your brother in the next town over. If you and your family are all calling the SAME out-of-area contact, that person can begin to tell everyone that calls WHO is WHERE, drastically lowering stress levels in everyone.

This accomplishes a few things:
1) Frees up the phone lines for Emergency Responders to be able to communicate, thus being able to help more people that need it, faster.
2) Allows YOU to focus on taking steps to be safe and help those around you instead of worrying about your sister/husband/grandma/nephew, etc.
