Word on the Street: Thom Thorpe, UMAC director of web strategy, will regale us with web-related happenings from winter quarter and enchant us with thoughts of what’s to come in spring. I believe there are a few professional development opportunities in there.

Equitable Language Guide (presentation slides): Meredith Jacobson, UMAC assistant director of content for editorial, will show the current version of the UW Equitable Language Guide (webpage) and discuss upcoming major updates and revisions to the guide, as well as some other useful resources for staying current on equitable language.

News Bytes: Peter Giles, senior developer and data analyst in the Office of the CISO, will give us an installment of News Bytes – a selection of recent web security news most relevant to the UW web content and development community.

Join us for a special, extended, Web Council meeting in January. We’ll meet on Thursday, January 5th at 9 a.m. for 90 minutes.

Our guest will be Nico Brooks ( https://twooctobers.com/nico-brooks/ ), Principle and Head of Analytics at Two Octobers ( https://twooctobers.com/ ) and leader in the analytics space. Nico will talk to us about the upcoming transition to Google Analytics 4 and give us a lot of great tips and advice for getting started with GA4. There will be plenty of time for questions at the end of his presentation.

UW WordPress Theme Showcase and Documentation: Tiffany Sevareid and Shelby Schumacher from the UMAC web strategy team will be presenting updates to the UW WordPress Theme. They will discuss new features and shortcodes available in the new theme and showcase updated sites. They will also introduce the new Web Strategy Cookbook website which provides a detailed breakdown of how to use our shortcodes to build the layout you want.

Security Short: Pete Graff from the Office of the CISO will be presenting tips for better Wi-Fi hygiene.

  • What’s New in Accessibility Technology: Terrill Thompson of UW-IT Accessible Technology Services will share “What’s New in Accessible Technology”, including an update on the new W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (version 2.2), the recent redesign and reorg of the Accessible Technology website, a new version of the “Accessible University” web accessibility demo site, preliminary findings from our research project on “predictors of web accessibility”, and an update on captioning efforts for UW-affiliated YouTube channels.
  • Security Short: Peter Giles from the Office of the CISO will share info on OWASP ZAP proxy, a tool for turning a security lens on your web application or site.

  • Getting the most out of your usability study: Five mistakes to learn from and avoid to live your best usability life! Have you been thinking about running a usability study and don’t know where to start? Looking for ways to include a little more UX in your web life? Listen to some lessons learned along the way from the College of Engineering web team and how usability studies, surveys and data insights have helped them better understand their first-year student audience.
  • Who is minding the store? Or, what to do with an orphaned CMS website… Do you find that you are responsible for a website that runs on a content management system, but don’t have a technical team to maintain it? In this talk we’ll cover the security implications of this scenario and walk through steps to find help.

Note: Due to scheduling conflicts, we will not be hosting Web Strategy Office Hours this month.

  • Centralizing News on Drupal: Wil Samson and Alex Bonilla from the Department of Medicine will provide a walk-through of their centralized news system designed to empower the department and its divisions through timely and broad publication of articles.
  • Security Short: Securing your GitHub code repository is an important step in preventing software supply-chain security attacks. In the first of an occasional series on this topic, we’ll start with a basic primer on git and GitHub, explore the UW GitHub service, examine how to manage access in GitHub.
