School of Medicine, Research and Graduate Education
The Human Genome Project and related efforts have led to the development of new technologies that generate vast quantities of molecular biological data and create the need for access to tools for large-scale analysis and interpretation. We propose to initiate the development of a shared resource for dissemination of advanced biological information (bioinformatics) technology to the UW community. The components of the BioCommons Computing Center will include: 1) advanced bioinformatics software, 2) networked high-capacity server hardware, 3) consultation and training services. This facility will be managed by the School of Medicine, and developed in partnership with the Health Sciences Libraries, the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, the School of Dentistry, the Regional Primate Research Center and biological and biomedical sciences departments. The School of Medicine has committed significant resources to initiate this project; Tools for Transformation funds will be used for personnel and software support during a two-year transitional period while a sustainable long-term funding system is established.
