International First Year Experience in Engineering Creativity & Design

College of Engineering

Beginning fall quarter 1999, the University of Washington will offer a bi-national pilot program for first-year engineering students. Approximately twenty-five incoming freshmen at both the University of Washington and Tohoku University in Japan will have the opportunity to participate in a joint project-based course (ENGR 100). The students will work together in bi-national teams in faculty member labs to solve real-life technical problems, participate in hands-on lab activities, and share results through written and oral reports. Students will communicate about research projects in real time via audio/video and e-mail, with the help of faculty and graduate students. In addition, students at UW will participate in a single credit freshmen seminar where cultural issues in Japan and America will be discussed. The expected outcomes of this project are that students will gain greater international awareness and develop design skills that will help them compete in a global engineering environment.
