Federal Government Shutdown – News & Updates 2024
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs Finance are closely monitoring the possibility of a partial federal government shutdown after midnight Friday, December 20, 2024.
We are hopeful congress will resolve the situation soon. Rest assured, the University of Washington is in a strong position from a liquidity standpoint, and is prepared to continue operating as usual for a few weeks.
What to expect from impacted agencies during a partial shutdown:
- Expect delays, lack of communication and support from impacted federal agencies.
- Agency staff may not be available for approvals, support or administrative functions.
- Active grants and contract activity with those agencies may continue if the shutdown is short, unless otherwise notified by the sponsor.
- Impacted Sponsors may decide to suspend application submissions.
- If a stop work order is issued on an award, GCA will place it in a restricted status that does not allow spend to post. A subsequent Award Modification in SAGE releasing the restriction will be required to resume activity.
- GCA will send an Award Portal ticket if they are unable to submit a Federal Financial Report. GCA will submit impacted reports as soon as the affected federal systems are back online.
- Impacted federal agencies may temporarily stop making payments. The UW has funding plans to ensure research continues in the event of a shutdown.
We will continue to provide more information and guidance relative to sponsored programs via MRAM and this page, as it becomes available. U.S. Office of Management and Budget – Agency Contingency Plans are available on the U.S. White House website.
