February Symposium (2/6-7) at the Simpson Center Explores Islam and the Practice of Forgiveness

Several notable scholars will convene at the UW’s Simpson Center for the Humanities on Feb. 6-7, 2014, for the symposium “Islam and Forgiveness.” According to organizer Arzoo Osanloo, an associate professor in the UW’s Law, Societies, & Justice program, while scriptural texts compel Muslims to be merciful and compassionate in their actions towards others, little is known about the actual practices and effects of this mandate in their local contexts. Scholars, including Thomas Barfield (Boston University) and Bertram Turner (Max Plank Institute for Social Anthropology), will take part in the symposium, exploring such topics as mercy, compassion, and the Islamic mandate of forgiveness through social and legal contexts. A keynote address will be delivered by renowned legal scholar Khaled Abou El Fadl (University of California, Los Angeles). It is free and open to the public. Click here to learn more.
