NIH: Fiscal Year 2020, ORCID ID Requirement

Update 8.22.19: added clarification from NIH and updated resources.

NIH: ORCID ID Requirement for Research Training, Fellowship, Research Education, and Career Development Awards

NIH NOT-OD-19-109 requires individuals supported by research training, fellowship, research education, and career development to have ORCID IDs linked to their eRA Commons Personal Profile in FY 2020 beginning with Oct. 2019 appointees.

We recommend:

  • Prospective applicants for Individual Fellowship and Career Development Awards follow the Create or Connect your ORCID ID link in eRA Commons and link their eRA profiles to existing ORCID accounts or create ORCID profiles and link them back to the eRA Commons.
  • PD/PIs for Institutional Research Training, Career Development and Research Education Awards should alert potential appointees to do the same.

Requirement Deadlines:

October 2019 – ORCID ID Required for Appointees

Including Activity Codes:
T03, T15, T32, T34, T35, T37, T42, T90/R90, TL1, TL4, TU2, K12/KL2, R25, R38, RL5, RL9

xTrain will check if ORCID IDs for appointees (trainees, scholars & participant) are linked to their eRA Commons Profile. Appointments will not be accepted for review if appointees do not have an ORCID ID linked to their eRA Commons profile.

January 25, 2020 – ORCID ID Required in Applications

Including Activity Codes:
F05, F30, F31, F32, F33, F37, F38, F99/K00, FI2, K01, K02, K05, K07, K08, K18, K22, K23, K24,K25, K26, K38, K43, K76, K99/R00

eRA system validations will check whether applicants have ORCID IDs. Applications will not be accepted if an ORCID ID is NOT linked to the PD/PI’s eRA Commons Personal Profile.

Update 8.22.19

After our original announcement on 8.14.19, the Office of Research received some questions regarding the scope of this requirement. We have checked with the NIH and they have confirmed this requirement only applies to new appointments and applications.

Per the NIH: “Reappointments and amendments submitted in xTrain will receive a “warning message” if trainees are lacking an ORCID iD, but will be allowed to proceed. NIH recognizes there are occasions when institutions need to submit such appointments after the trainee has left the institution and is no longer available.”
