NSF: Mandatory Multifactor Authentication Effective 10/27
Effective 10/27/2024, all Research.gov users must use multifactor authentication (MFA) to access the system.
Users with Administrative or Financial Roles will be required to use phishing-resistant multifactor authentication methods (MFA). Impacted roles are mostly central office roles, however the “Proposed Post Doctoral Fellows” role is also impacted. Review: Tips to establish phishing-resistant MFA.
NSF indicates that while Principal Investigators or Other Authorized User (OAU) roles will be required to use MFA they are not required to use phishing-resistant MFA.
All users signing into Research.gov with their NSF credentials on or after 10/27 will be prompted to enroll in an MFA method within Research.gov.
If you have not already, we recommend setting up and using a Login.gov account which allows you to access multiple federal agency systems, including Research.gov, eRA Commons, and Grants.gov.
On 10/27, NSF Training resources including how-to guides and frequently asked questions (FAQs) will be available within a new “About Signing Into Research.gov” page on Research.gov Help.
