UW professor David Baker wins the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry

The Office of Research congratulates our esteemed colleague David Baker, professor of biochemistry and director of the Institute for Protein Design, on being awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his groundbreaking work on computational protein design. David and his team are pioneers in using computing power and AI to learn how chains of amino acids fold into protein structures, which have led to breakthroughs in predicting protein structures and contributed to the world’s first computationally designed protein medicine, a vaccine for COVID-19 developed at UW Medicine.

We join UW leadership and the entire research community in celebrating David Baker as he assumes his place as a Nobel Prize laureate – another milestone in a career of extraordinary achievements.
